Stellar Students: Austin Larson, Mishicot High School

Name: Austin Larson

Parents: Miri and Gerard Ney

School: Mishicot High School

Year: Senior

What extracurricular activities have you been involved with during high school? Forensics, musical theater, student government, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Solar Olympics, Chess Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters

What is one academic accomplishment about which you feel particularly good? The score I achieved on my ACT.

Which class or extracurricular activity influenced your decision regarding the career you plan to pursue? I haven’t really been influenced by a class or an extracurricular activity, I just knew that this was something I wanted to do as a career when I was younger.

What advice do you have for those just starting their high school career? Get involved, and don’t be afraid to try things you never thought about trying before. Try to make as many good connections with people as you can, as you never know where those connections may take you.

What are your plans after high school? Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from either Marquette University or UW-Madison, as well as a master’s degree in tissue engineering.

What would you like to be doing 10 years from now? Working with stem cells and other biological materials necessary to create organs, organ systems, and blood in order to perform research on, or to help provide the organ transplant system/blood banks with working blood and/or organs, so as to not solely rely on organ/blood donors to perform their duties.

Teacher recommendation: "Austin is a stellar student because he is intelligent and hardworking, he will never shy away from a challenge, he is a great leader, and he genuinely cares about serving others without seeking recognition." — Tracy Bauer, English teacher and musical director
